 BRICS gives more political leverage to some countries (South Africa) than it does to others (India). In BRICS, India is in the shadow of China too. The diverging and conflicting interests but also the fear of China&#039;s products hampers a possible free trade agreement between the 5.
It would have been interesting to provide China&#039;s view in this conference too....
The usefulness and success of groupings like BRICS is its capacity to succeed in making civil society (e.g. academics) &quot;appropriate&quot; the forum and participate to its evolution and debate outside the official meetings. In the case of BRICS it is much more difficult than it was for other groupings like IBSA where the academics were much less doubtful of its potential.</description>
